Music Mark and ISM launch GCSE music research survey

9th June 2016

GCSE music survey

The subject associations for music education have teamed up with the University of Sussex to carry out vital research into music and its position in secondary schools.

ISM and Music Mark urge all classroom teachers to respond to the University of Sussex’ survey a http://bit.ly/GCSEmusicSurvey. Research comes at a critical time for music education in secondary schools.

The University of Sussex has launched an online survey to build a comprehensive view of secondary school music provision, generating robust information on changes and factors impacting on music education in schools. Music Mark and the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) are working with the University of Sussex to promote this research.

Jem Shuttleworth, Chief Executive of Music Mark said:

“Music education hubs are working to support schools in meeting their obligations and to deliver music in the curriculum. Nowhere clearer are the pressures than in our secondary schools. We – as the two subject associations for music – will be working with colleagues across the music education sector to put together a comprehensive picture of music provision so that we can work together and support music education into the future.”

Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM), said:

“We are constantly hearing reports from our members about their challenges to protect music education in their schools in what can be a difficult environment. This rigorous and robust research will help us get a real picture of music education in secondary schools. We will be working with colleagues from across the music education sector to use the findings to support music education now and into the future.”

The survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete and will produce a full picture of music education over the past five years. Take part now at: http://bit.ly/GCSEmusicSurvey
