Recording

  • Use the audio recorder function to capture live audio
  • Use the red record button within GarageBand to record musical ideas
  • Record and/or input simple MIDI data and apply quantisation in a musical way
  • Use the screen record function to capture other suitable performances

Continue to create opportunities for learners to use the audio recorder function to record vocals/instruments. Ask them to use the red record button to capture musical ideas and multitrack several parts. When recording, they can use the metronome function to help keep time.

After recording MIDI sounds, show learners how to quantise notes in a musical way. Support them to input and manipulate simple MIDI data (such as 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures and rhythms using 1/4 and 1/8 notes) to create beats, basslines, chordal progressions and melodies.

When recording live vocals or instruments, ask learners to explore the audio recorder settings in order to add pre-set instrument-specific FX (such as Sweet Chorus for Vocals, or Dark Room for Acoustic Guitar).

When recording live audio, the teacher should encourage promoting a balanced distance between the microphone (on the iPad) and the performer. Here ‘balanced’ is used to mean not too close and not too far.

By using the screen record function on the iPad, learners can capture any performances they create, whether it’s using the Live Loops function or virtual instruments feature.
