We have created a template to help you write to your local MP regarding music education in schools for the academic year 24/25.
Points to consider:
- This is provided as a template and should be edited to reflect your local situation
- Please consider who is best placed to send this letter. For example, if you are in a Local Authority, please think through the council’s processes for this sort of communication i.e., do you need to consult your political portfolio holder and is the letter best-placed to come from them? Alternatively, you could utilise the independent Hub Chair as they will not be constrained by LA processes and can send this on behalf of the Music Hub, though not the Music Service.
- You’ll notice that we have avoided any mention of funding or sector ‘scene setting’. Whilst Music Mark will continue to strongly advocate for greater funding for music education, based on the advice we have received from multiple sources, the function of these initial contacts should be about establishing or re-establishing a relationship and dialogue with your MP, and should be about promoting the positive work being undertaken by our members across the country.
- Ensure that any examples you quote have taken place wholly or partially in the constituency of the MP you are writing to. They are less likely to be interested in activity you have delivered in your area but which is in a different constituency.
