Starting with Music: Building creative music lessons from a musical stimulus at KS1 and KS2

Added to website 30/03/2023. Updated 17/04/2024.

Learn how to create practical music lessons for KS1 & KS2 classrooms with Reading University’s Dr. Rebecca Berkley.

The most fun thing about teaching music is getting to do music with the children. Music lessons work best when there is plenty of practical activity like movement, rhythm work, performing, singing, playing instruments, creating and composing.

In March 2023 Rebecca and her colleague Mark Aitchison presented a session focused on creating practical music lessons from musical stimuli like chants and songs, listening extracts and musical games that help children learn and apply musical concepts through listening, appraising, composing and performing. Watch the session for practical examples suitable for KS1 and KS2 lessons, and read through participants’ ideas and tips for classrooms.
